GUWAHATI: The much-awaited Maligaon flyover is ready to be flagged off for use by the public on Wednesday. A lot of preparations have been made for this landmark project in the city, including paintings and the illumination of the flyover. At a total length of 2.63 kilometres, this is the longest flyover of the city yet. It has been constructed by Anupam Nirman Pvt. Ltd. and Shree Gautam Construction Co. Ltd., with a total expenditure of over Rs 420 crore.
The work on this project started over two and a half years ago, and the whole project has two parts: the main flyover from Maligaon to Kamakhya Gate and the Pandu wing. While the main flyover is about 2.3 km long, the Pandu wing is about 300 metres in length. A total of 210 electric poles have also been erected to ensure proper illumination of the flyover at night. But the most important detail regarding this project is that once opened, this flyover is expected to bring relief to the citizens from the massive traffic problems in the Maligaon region of the city. The distance of about 6 kilometres from Shantipur to Jalukbari used to take an average of an hour to cover, increasing to nearly 2 hours on some days over the last two and a half years, and now it is expected to reduce to about 15-20 minutes on personnel vehicles. The inaugural event will be held on Wednesday afternoon, and the flyover is expected to open for the public in the late evening.
